Golden Globes 2017

BEST.png

The 74th Annual Golden Globes kicked off on Sunday, January 8 with a huge number of films and television shows featured throughout the night. While these sorts of award shows rarely present themselves as anything but predictable, this year’s event was interesting enough just for the wide range of people, experiences, and stories represented.

By no surprise at all, La La Land won in EVERY SINGLE category it was nominated in (Best Score, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Drama, and Best Original Song). It is now the most awarded movie in the history of Golden Globes. Sidetone: I was so happy to see that Moonlight won for Best Drama!

About halfway through the show, Meryl Streep received the Cecil B. DeMille Award and had a strong political message to share about the state of our country after a tumultuous presidential election. Watch it here.

Some of my favorite tv shows and films of the year (Lion, Stranger Things, This is Us) failed to win any awards they were nominated for. However, seeing such a diverse and unique group of stories represented in this year’s Golden Globes makes me hopeful that this is the new normal for representation in our popular culture (Atlanta, Moonlight, Transparent, etc).
