We all have our own personal fashion icons, those who never fail to amaze you on the red carpet or with their street style. But what about those normal, everyday people you pass on the street? Have you ever seen an impeccably dressed stranger? I’m sure you have.
Living in the city of Chicago means you get to see an unimaginable amount of unique styles walking down the street every day. Living in a big city means you can use the streets as your runway. It’s easy to say that I’m inspired every day when I take a break from my phone and look around, those standing next to me on my morning commute to class on the L, those in line in front of me, waiting to get coffee, even those who maintain their personal style at the gym.
My friend Sophie, 18, is currently studying film at Columbia College Chicago. We’ve known each other for just a couple of years: we magically met online through the infinite depths that is the One Direction fandom (if you’re in it, you get it). And we’ve only met face to face ONCE! That’s it, just once. Despite only meeting once in a brief, unplanned passing at Lollapalooza last year, she’s definitely one of my style icons.
I wanted to feature Sophie on my blog for her personal style and her admirable outlook on the world. Here’s what she had to say.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would maybe describe my style as simple. I’ve never really been able to give it an exact description because it’s not specific to anything. I think style isn’t in what you wear but the person wearing it and so my style is just a collection of things I feel comfortable in. And it’s usually pretty simple since I’m not very good with accessorizing. I also always find myself to be attracted to patterns and prints, which a lot of people tend to shy away from.
Q: What’s your favorite thing to shop for?
A: I’ve ALWAYS had an affinity for graphic tees. They will never let you down, ever. I also love wearing dresses and mini skirts of all kinds. I think these 3 items sort of “do the talkin” and can make a look seem effortless because they’re so easy and accommodating.
Q: Where do you shop the most?
A: I do thrift a lot because you can find unique stuff to play with. I think ASOS offers everything so that’s usually my go-to and forever21 has it’s perks. But, with that it’s really hit or miss.
Q: Do you have any shopping secrets to share?
A: A shopping secret of mine is definitely the sale/clearance section. With really popular sites/stores, the clearance stuff is either junk or really cool/different stuff that was too unique for popular taste and trend, so no one bought it. You’d be surprised what get’s passed up.
Q: Do you have a style icon? If so, who?
A: Alexa Chung is such an obvious answer I think because she really does epitomize “style”. I feel like she kinda raised me when it comes down to finding my own style. Other than that, I have soooo many. So, I’ll say most recently I was watching Uptown Girls and really loved how playful Brittany Murphy’s character dressed. New style icon, for sure.
Q: What is your favorite, current trend?
A: The 70’s style is really coming in quick and I’m so pumped about that!
Q: Do you have any style advice?
A: I feel like I’m not in a position to offer any style advice so I’ll keep it to “you do you.” and to always build your style. Don’t feel like you have to be defined as one “look” and don’t be afraid to change. Ya know, just stay inspired by everything and everyone.
