New Music Sunday

New Music Sunday – 1/20/2019

spiritnight-2.png

I thought last week brought us a ton of good music, this week was even better! We’re so lucky to be starting off this year with such great music so early.

I’ve compiled over 30 songs I’ve been loving this week: lots came out as early as Monday, which was super unusual in terms of days I see music being released regularly.

This week I wanted to highlight 5 of the songs that are my favorites, since there are so many to sift through and I think some deserve a bit more when I’m particularly excited about them. I’ll probably continue this format with future posts and I started this last week on Instagram by highlighting my favorites from that week’s post.

Noteworthy album & EP releases:
Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? – Deerhunter
Late Riser –
Frances Cone
Assume Form –
James Blake
Heard It In A Past Life – Maggie Rogers

“Almost (Sweet Music)” – Hozier
Release Date – January 16

We all know how much I love Hozier and how long it’s been since he’s released his debut album and I’m so happy he finally announced a release date this past week! Wasteland, Baby! is out on March 1 and although I’ve really enjoyed all of the singles he’s shared so far, this one has solidified that I’m ready and excited to hear his follow-up and REALLY hope that the rest of the album has this sound.

“I Get No Joy” – Jade Bird
Release Date – January 16

“Numb Without You” – The Maine
Release Date – January 16

I’ve been following The Maine’s career for about 10 years now (crazy) and I think this is the perfect sound for them. I love the cellos and the production. It reminds me so much of Good Charlotte. I’m excited to hear what’s next from The Maine at this stage of their career: their album drops at the end of March.

“Demands” – Marthaverskan
Release Date – January 16

“Andromeda” – Weyes Blood

“Blue Wings” – Wild Nothing

“What Happens To People?” – Deerhunter

“arrow” – half-alive
Release Date – January 18

“Assume Form” – James Blake
Release Date – January 18

I have always been a casual listener of James Blake and I really loved his collab with Bon Iver. This album drew me in specifically after I heard his first single release with Metro Boomin’ and Travis Scott. I can confidently say that this is my favorite album of 2019 so far (I know it’s early, but…) and I’m excited to take the time to listen to this album more and more. It’s so beautiful from start to end and this song as an opening track is astounding to hear.

“Wishing For Rain” – j ember
Release Date – January 18

“Calamity” – King Shelter
Release Date – January 18

“Can’t Help The Way I Feel” – Lily & Madeleine
Release Date – January 18

“Don’t Be Cruel” – Lo-Fang
Release Date – January 18

“My Name Isn’t” – LOVA
Release Date – January 18

“Overnight” – Maggie Rogers
Release Date – January 18

I’ve been blogging about Maggie for years now and her debut album is finally here! I’m thinking I will be doing a post on this album in its entirety because I have so many thoughts, but this song instantly got me hooked during my first listen of the album. I don’t think it’s my favorite, but I think this song really encapsulates her sound as an artist and brings in elements of her early singles like “Alaska” and “On + Off” and her newer tracks on the album, which is cool.

“Gum” – Sam Setton
Release Date – January 18

“Hands” – Sharon Van Etten
Release Date – January 18

“Don’t Feel Like Crying” – Sigrid
Release Date – January 18

I can really relate to this song as I’m sharing this post and first heard it, so it instantly became a highlight of this week’s releases. Sigrid continues to release strong pop singles and I’m really hoping to hear a lot more from her debut album, out in March. She does a great job at incorporating sad subject matter into upbeat songs, which is a concept I’ve shared numerous times that I really enjoy and appreciate.

“Mi Rumba” – Sofi Tukker, ZHU
Release Date – January 18

“Lost Frequencies” – The Swoons, Transviolet
Release Date – January 18

“Freelance” – Toro y Moi
Release Date – January 18
